Supporting Sustainable Conservation in Tanzania

PEM is currently conducting a Mid-Term Evaluation of Project Selous, implemented by the Tanzanian NGO Six Rivers Africa. The mission took our team from Ruaha National Park to Nyerere National Park, providing a valuable opportunity to observe the project’s implementation on the ground and engage directly with the people and institutions driving it forward.

The assignment has highlighted the complexity of wildlife conservation and protected area management. While strengthening ecosystem protection is a central objective, the mission demonstrated how lasting conservation depends on more than protecting wildlife alone. Long-term success also requires collaboration with local authorities and communities, the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities, and strong local ownership of conservation efforts.

Through project site visits and discussions with staff, community members, government partners, and conservation experts, the evaluation is exploring how the different interventions work together to address both environmental and socioeconomic challenges.
