PEM East Africa recently conducted a Socio-economic Assessment Survey of Tree Grower Support by the Private Forestry Programme Phase I in Tanzania. The programme seeks to reduce poverty and inequality and increase rural income in Southern Highlands of Tanzania Mainland with expected multiplier effects to nearby communities and to the national economy, through developing sustainable and profitable forestry and value addition in the entire production value chain from quality seeds to quality products in markets. The objective of the survey was to assess the impact of the programme and establish baseline information for the designing of phase II including preparation of the M&E system. The consultant collected and analysed both qualitative and quantitative data. One important finding of the survey is that tree growers of different gender, age groups and wealth ranks across all villages perceived their wealth and wellbeing improved after the programme interventions. The Private Forestry Programme is implemented jointly by the Government of Finland and the Government of Tanzania.
